During the past several weeks, the generosity and loyalty of our University of Rochester family has been remarkable. The community has come together to financially support two emergency COVID-19 funds—one for students and one for the Medical Center—and has made thousands of in-kind donations supporting patients and our frontline health care workers.

The Medical Center and Rochester Regional Health are investigating a new potential coronavirus vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech. The clinical trial will recruit 90 individuals in the Rochester area ages 18 to 85 who have not been infected with COVID-19. This is the only active COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial in upstate New York, and Rochester is one of only four sites in the US conducting early stage studies of the vaccine.

University of Rochester scientist David Topham, the Marie Curran Wilson and Joseph Chamberlain Wilson Professor of microbiology and immunology, was recently featured in this NBC Today Show segment. Experts, including Topham, share tips about what to consider before getting tested and what the results means for immunity.

Medical Center researchers are leading the effort to determine if and when a person could be re-infected with COVID-19. The findings could have significant implications for the public health response to the pandemic, the development of COVID-19 vaccines, and decisions related to re-opening the economy and society.

When the pandemic hit, Jamie Sokol ’05, MPH, was pulled in early. As the manager for workforce development at the Allegheny County Health Department in southwestern Pennsylvania, she and her colleagues had to implement the county’s public health emergency response plan, and they had to do it fast.

Every year, students in the University of Rochester Orchestras mark the last day of classes and the end of successful term with a live performance of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.” This year, they worked with director Rachel Waddell and audio and music engineering lecturer Stephen Roessner to compile a virtual performance.
